How to Take Care of Your Towels
Caring properly for your towels will help extend their use and also retain their softness and vibrant color. Here are some steps on how to properly take care of your towels:
-
Tip #1 - Wash the towels before the first use. When the towel is manufactured, it is coated with a special fabric softener to make the fabric fluffy and soft. These solutions can interfere with water absorption, so we recommend that you wash the towel without laundry detergent, but use two cups of white vinegar for this initial wash cycle.
-
Tip #2 - Use only half of the detergent recommended for the load, so that towels will remain soft. Often, the soap residue will make the cotton feel hard and stiff to the touch.
-
Tip #3 - Don’t wash towels with other clothing items---Wash them in a load by themselves. Accessories and notions such as buttons, hooks, Velcro or zippers can pull or snag on the towels as they are going through the washer and dryer, thus resulting in frays, rips, and holes.
-
Tip #4 - After you use your towels in the shower or bath, hang the towels to air-dry. Avoid bunching them up in the clothes hamper or laundry basket, as this can cause mildew.
-
Tip #5 - Use a good quality laundry stain remover to pre-treat any dirt or food stains on the towels immediately when you notice them. Some effective stain removers are Shout®, and SPRAY ‘N WASH®.
-
Tip #6 - Follow the directions on the care label. Washing in hot water or drying with excess heat may result in shrinkage of your towels. We recommend that you wash and rinse in warm water using the gentle wash cycle.
-
Tip #7 - Unless necessary for all-white loads, avoid using bleach on a regular basis. It will break down the fibers more quickly and make the towel wear out faster. Using a good quality laundry detergent, such as ALL, Cheer®, Tide, OxiClean, or Woolite® are usually effective to ensure clean towels for typical everyday use.
-
Tip #8 - Liquid fabric softeners also can weaken the towel’s ability to absorb water. It is recommended that you add one-half cup of baking soda to the wash load for added freshness if desired.
-
Tip #9 - After washing, transfer towels to the dryer immediately and dry on a "cotton setting". Remove towels promptly from the dryer, and fold immediately. If you like to hang dry your towels outside for that outside freshness, after you bring them in, run them through a "fluff cycle" in your dryer prior to folding them and putting them away.
